Welcome

Welcome to the homepage of "StaBil", a research project that is dedicated to investigating status dynamics and educational inheritance ("Statusdynamiken und Bildungserbe") of families in Germany.

The study centres around the question of the mid- and long-term dynamics in the inter-generational transmission of education and social status in families. This includes the reproduction of social inequalities as well as inter-generational up- and downward mobility. StaBil combines quantitative longitudinal analyses based on data of the German Socio-Economic Panel Study (SOEP) with qualitative interviews with participants of the SOEP. For the first time, participants of a long-running household panel study are also investigated with the help of qualitative interviews. On the one hand, we are interested in how mid- and long-term dynamics of parents‘ (educational) biographies inter-relate with children’s educational trajectories. On the other hand, we explore how our quantitative analyses link up with family members’ educational strategies and strategies of social positioning as investigated by qualitative interviews. From this, we expect to gain insight into the social and family mechanisms that contribute to producing the inter-generational persistence of educational inequalities as well as represent conditions of up- and downward mobility.

StaBil is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research („Rahmenprogramm zur Förderung der empirischen Bildungsforschung“) and runs from 01/12/2011 to 30/11/2014.
